Information and Resources on the NIH Public Access Policy

Check journal practices before submitting

Check how the journal will support compliance with the NIH policy. Search the Jisc Open Policy Finder for your journal or publisher to find summaries of their archiving policies and links to the policy pages at publisher websites so you can verify the information.

Deposit your manuscript after acceptance

Most publishers will submit the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) to the NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS) on your behalf. The NIH has helpful guidance for Authors, including a Journal List to determine which journals will submit for you. If your journal does not submit on your behalf, you are required to submit the AAM via NIHMS. Find help with the NIHMS: Video explainerstutorials, and FAQs are available to guide you through the deposit process.

Track compliance

Use “My Bibliography” in My NCBI to check the status of your articles. Noncompliance can delay grant renewals and future funding decisions. If the reason your publication is non-compliant is because the publisher has indicated an embargo, this will be indicated as "embargoed in PMC". You will need to address this issue with your publisher.

Cite your PMCID

Be sure to include your PubMed Central ID (PMCID) in progress reports, applications, or proposals to the NIH. This shows that you are compliant.
