Which version should you install?

• New users who are installing EndNote for the first time and macOS users running Catalina or later should install the latest version, EndNote 21.
• Current EndNote users looking to upgrade from older, pre-X9 versions might consider installing version X9.2 because:
  • Version X9.3 introduced a new file format for EndNote Library files and data folders and requires converting your existing EndNote Libraries to this new file format, which is not backwards compatible with older versions of EndNote.
  • Some users have reported problems with the conversion process.
  • If you share your EndNote Libraries by emailing compressed library files to collaborators, those running older versions of EndNote will not be able to open them if you upgrade to the latest version.
  • Regardless of which version you choose to install, you should always back up your EndNote library prior to upgrading.

A few known compatibility issues:

• The Microsoft Edge browser cannot be used to install EndNote. Edge 10 users can install EndNote using Firefox or Chrome.
• Users of macOS Catalina or later must install EndNote 21. X9.2 is not compatible with these versions of macOS.

Before you begin:

• Administrator rights are required to install this software on OHSU-managed computers.
• You may be asked to close any running Microsoft Office apps, including Outlook.

How to install EndNote for Windows

1. Determine from above which version you should install and then click on one of the links listed at the below to download the installer.
2. Once the download has completed, go to your Downloads or Temp folder, and extract the zipped files.
3. Double-click on the installer file.
   • If you get a pop-up message that says "Windows protected your PC," click "More info" and then "Run anyway."

4. Select Yes to allow the installers to make changes.

   

5. Select Yes to install EndNote.

   
6. Follow the prompts to complete installation.

Before you begin:

• Administrator rights are required to install this software on OHSU-managed computers.
• Make sure you are running the latest version of Microsoft Word:
  1. Launch Microsoft Word.
  2. Select Help on the toolbar at the top of the screen.
  3. Click Check for Updates.
  4. Install any available updates.
  5. Close Word.
• You may be asked to close any running Microsoft Office apps, including Outlook.

How to install EndNote for Mac

1. Determine which version of EndNote you need to use, then download the corresponding installer from the list below.

2. Once the download has completed, go to your Downloads folder, using the shortcut from the Dock or from the Go menu in Finder.

    

3. Double-click on the installer file to mount it as an installation disk. The installer disk will automatically open. If it does not, find and double click on the newly mounted EndNote Installer disk on your desktop or in your Finder sidebar.

   

4. Double click Install EndNote X9.app and follow the prompts to complete installation.
