Parts of a Citation

Journal article:

The most basic entry for a journal consists of the author name(s), year published, article title, journal name, volume number, issue number, page numbers and DOI* when available or link to the article, if no DOI is avaiable.

Last Name(s), F. (Year Published). Article title. Journal Name in Italics, Volume Number in italics(Issue Number), Page Numbers. DOI

Kent, F., & Keating, J. L. (2015). Interprofessional education in primary health care for entry level students: A systematic literature review. Nurse Education Today, 35(12), 1221-1231. doi:10.1016/j.nedt.2015.05.005

Book:

Author, A.A., & Author, B.B. (Date). Title of book. Publisher Name.

Gawande, A. (2010). The checklist manifesto : How to get things right. Picador.

  • If there is a doi or URL, include that at the end.
  • Include up to 20 author names.
  • 21+ authors, cite first 19 authors, insert an ellipsis and then last author listed.

What is a DOI?

The digital object identifier (DOI) is a unique identifier for citation linking services for scientific publishing in the digital world. It is another way for people to find things in the digital environment, so it is helpful to include it in a citation if it is available.

DOIs are now routinely included in databases following the journal title.

Citation Managers

Endnote is available to OHSU students for the duration of their time at the university. If you wish to continue using it after you leave you will need to pay for it yourself.

Zotero is a free, open source citation management tool. Features include: 

  • a web interface
  • a desktop app 
  • a one-click citation and document upload button (Zotero Connector)
  • a built-in Word and LibreOffice write-n-cite plugin; a GoogleDocs plugin (automatic with Zotero Connector installation)
  • mobile apps -- including access to stored full text
  • sharing and collaboration features
  • ability to annotate files
  • ability to sync between web, desktop and mobile versions
  • 300 MB of free storage (you can pay to upgrade)
