A course by OHSU's Office of Clinical Integration and Evidence-Based Practice

This course is designed to teach evidence-based practice (EBP) skills that will enable staff to conduct extensive evaluations of existing literature to improve patient care. The program provides a comprehensive overview of EBP, and the components essential for implementation of EBP in a clinical setting.  It is designed to focus on skills needed to critically evaluate information available from research findings and professional consensus statements. Essential topics for clinical inquiry are addressed, including: developing PICO (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) questions, evaluating existing clinical guidelines, critically analyzing and synthesizing research articles using the GRADE criteria, and integrating evidence into practice. During the course, each inter-professional team will develop a guideline and accompanying clinical decision support tool to support implementation (i.e., order set, smart set, patient education material).

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Analyze the major components of the EBP process.

  2. Utilize PICO question(s) for framing clinical inquiry.

  3. Search online databases for evidence.

  4. Analyze an existing guideline with the University of Pennsylvania’s Trustworthy Guideline Rating Scale.

  5. Critically analyze research articles based on levels of evidence.

  6. Synthesize collected evidence to develop a guideline and clinical decision support tools.

  7. Determine appropriate measures to evaluate the effectiveness of EBP implementation and use data for quality improvement.

  8. Disseminate results through the development of a scholarly product.
